FAQ

WHAT IF WE DON’T GENERATE ANY HAZARDOUS WASTE?

Many hospitals are not even aware of what products are hazardous.  Items like nicotine, warfarin, insulin, and phenol become hazardous when they become waste.

HOW DO PHARMACEUTICAL PRODUCTS BECOME HAZARDOUS WASTES?

As soon as an item goes ‘off-spec’ it is considered waste.  If it possesses any hazardous qualities, regulations define that as hazardous waste.  Samples, damaged, partially dispensed, repackaged, or otherwise unusable drugs are all considered wastes.  Some of these will be hazardous wastes.

CAN I DISPOSE OF DRUG WASTES THROUGH ‘REDBAG’ OR SHARPS DISPOSAL?

This is a violation of RCRA and D.O.T. regulations that can be found in C.F.R. 49, Subpart C, §177.848

HOW SHOULD I DISPOSE OF CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES THAT ARE HAZARDOUS?

After Niatrox completes your risk assessment, we provide you with a compliant method for disposing of these products.  If is against Federal Law to dump these products down the drain (33 U.S.C. §1251).

WHY DO I NEED TO PROVIDE A LIST OF PURCHASES FOR MY RISK ASSESSMENT?

Niatrox can define your E.P.A. generator status only after we have determined which items stocked in the pharmacy are hazardous, and how much waste your facility is projected to generate.

HOW MANY SEPARATE WASTE CONTAINERS WILL I HAVE TO HAVE?

This depends on the result of our risk assessment.  Most hospitals will need at least two waste containers in clinical areas.

HOW OFTEN DO I NEED TO HAVE THE CONTAINERS PICKED UP OR SHIPPED BACK?

This also depends on the result of our risk assessment.  Locations are subject to varying accumulation time limits or may be restricted by the amount of storage space available for waste products.  We will recommend the most cost effective solution and customized answers for each customer.

HOW DO I GET STARTED ON THE RISK ASSESSMENT?

For your initial customer setup, we need a record of your drug purchases through your wholesaler or direct accounts for the past 12 months.  This purchasing record must contain the NDC number in order to be analyzed. Every subsequent 90 days, Niatrox will request an updated wholesaler purchasing file.  An update analysis will be provided in both hard copy and electronic format.
